What is the difference between a limo and a party bus?
A stretch limousine is a lengthened car or SUV with bench seating along the sides, a low roof and a bar console. Which costs less, a limo or a party bus?
Per hour they overlap. In San Diego, Chrysler 300 stretch limos typically run $150 to $300 per hour and SUV and Hummer limos $175 to $400, while party buses run $150 to $300 per hour for 10 to 24 seats and $250 to $450 for 26 to 45 seats. Both carry a four-hour minimum on weekend evenings.
Per person is where they separate. A 12-passenger limo at $1,000 for four hours is about $83 a head. A 22-passenger party bus at $1,200 for the same four hours is $55 a head when the seats are full. If your group is 16 or more, a party bus is almost always the lower cost per person; if it is 12 or fewer, the limo usually is.
The cost driver to watch is the number of stops. A limo is easy to board and unload, but its low ceiling gets old on a night with five bars. A party bus makes the time between stops part of the evening, so groups tend to plan fewer, longer stops and get more from the same four hours.
How to choose for your San Diego night
Count riders first. Under 12, choose a Chrysler 300 or Navigator limo. Then look at the route. One pickup, one venue and one ride home, such as a Petco Park game or a concert at Snapdragon Stadium, suits a limo.
